Thin Wild Mercury

A LIMITED EDITION OF JUST 1,500 COPIES, EACH SIGNED BY JERRY SCHATZBERG, THIN WILD MERCURY FEATURES NEARLY 500 PHOTOS. MANY HAVE NEVER BEEN PUBLISHED BEFORE WHILE OTHERS HAVE BECOME ICONIC, INCLUDING THE SHOTS USED ON DYLAN'S MOST INFLUENTIAL ALBUM, BLONDE ON BLONDE, RELEASED 40 YEARS AGO, IN AUGUST 1966.

Jerry and Dylan first met in 1965 while the latter was recording Highway 61 Revisited. They became friends and, over the course of the next year, Jerry took an extraordinary collection of photographs of Dylan recording, playing live, socialising and in Jerry's studio. Having just 'gone electric' and in the process of recording Blonde on Blonde, the photos capture Dylan at the most exciting point of his career.

'I got a call from Sara [Lowndes]. She said: "Bobby hears you want to photograph him." I said, "I would love to." She said he was recording an album and gave me the address. When I showed up they were in the middle of recording Highway 61 Revisited.. That's how it began.'

The book's 300 pages feature nearly 500 photographs, many of which have never been published before. All images are printed in four-colour with image varnishing, on three different luxurious art papers and are bound in a bespoke cloth.

Every copy in the edition features a print of Bob Dylan inset into the front cover, and is housed in an elegant slipcase.

FROM CREATOR OF POETIC IMAGES TO COMPELLING STORYTELLER, FEW ARTISTS CAN CLAIM TO HAVE CRAMMED AS MUCH INTO THEIR CREATIVE LIVES AS JERRY SCHATZBERG.

A former photographer for Vogue and Life magazines, and a New Yorker through and through, Schatzberg was at the centre of the city's cultural whirlpool in the Sixties, from where he captured candid photographs and intimate portraits of the generation's most notable artists, celebrities and thinkers.

His subjects have been as diverse as there have been many and include: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Aretha Franklin, Sammy Davis Jr, Andy Warhol, Harold Pinter, Roman Polanski, Robert Rauschenberg, Sharon Tate, Steve McQueen, Martha Graham, Fidel Castro, Ted Kennedy and, of course, Bob Dylan. Many of these images are included in Thin Wild Mercury.

In the Seventies, Jerry Schatzberg turned his creative talents to film and immediately became an influential figure in the renaissance of American cinema.

The Panic in Needle Park starred Al Pacino in a stunning film debut and won co-star, Kitty Winn, a Best Actress award at Cannes. Scarecrow - again starring Al Pacino, this time alongside Gene Hackman - was awarded the prestigious Palme d'Or at Cannes and Hackman has since called it his favourite film. Stills and on-set photographs from Jerry's films are included in Thin Wild Mercury.
